With the ever competitive retail industry getting increasingly aggressive, good retail location and reactive promotion strategies are no longer enough to guarantee retailers of long-term survival. Struggling shop owners and store managers now need to look at all aspects of promotion and customer behaviour to maximize profits and get an edge on their competitors.
Consumers now have more choice than ever and so are less likely to visit a store which does not immediately appeal to them. Therefore, the design of a store and the type of shopping environment that the store presents are the key factors in determining long-term success for today’s retailers. In simple terms, the first impression that a person receives about a store will determine whether a retailer gains or loses potential customers.
The science behind manipulating a store’s environment to increase influence over customers’ purchasing behaviour is known as retail design. It can be a very powerful weapon for retailers and can help to ensure far more potential customers are gained than lost. Successful retail designers can inspire even the most resistant customers to consider parting with their hard-earned cash. By using visually stimulating signage and attractive window displays to get potential customers in to the store, customers are then presented with an agreeable environment with subtle yet informative advertising to make their shopping experience a positive one. Naturally, a positive shopping experience is far more likely to result in a sale than a mediocre or negative one, so the results will speak for themselves.

An effective point of sale (POS) retail display can take many forms and is no longer just the preserve of well-established brands. Effective POS displays such as counter top displays, cardboard units and pop-up displays carry a strong ‘act now’ message which can prompt customers to investigate more about a product or service as soon as they see it. Although POS displays are a relatively simple method of promotion, many retailers simply do use them to their full effect. This is usually because they are unaware of the two most important aspects of developing a successful point of sale display.
How and where a POS display is placed should never be underestimated. POS displays will only deliver significant benefits when customers see them at the right time. Therefore it is essential to put POS displays in places where people can read them while they are waiting for something. Good locations to put POS displays include, by a pay desk, near restaurant tables, or within view of a bar.
Simple & immediate
Even when waiting, no one is going to take much interest in a boring sign. Every product or service needs to have an attention-grabbing quote or a eye-catching design in order to engage peoples’ interest enough to make them react positively.
By bearing these two points in mind, any retailer will be able to avoid the obvious mistakes and find success in this simple but often undervalued form of advertising.

Successful advertising is an absolute must to ensure your particular retail business remains competitive. The best way to ensure customers remain engaged with your particular brand or product is to utilise effective advertising techniques. Thankfully, there are several different ways in which you can promote your business, some of which require only minimal outlay.
Professional retail designers put a lot of faith in the humble retail display because they are a simple and quick way to dramatically increase sales. This can be seen most clearly in a basic point of sale display. Simply display an accessible everyday product such as batteries or sweets next to a pay desk and the results will speak for themselves.
Using signs both inside and outside of your premises can also be a great method for generating interest and increasing sales. There are many different types of signs available such as pop-up signs, window signs and banners. Banner signs are especially effective as they are very visually impressive and versatile.
When used as part of a detailed strategy, well thought out retail displays and effective signage can actually be one of the most effective methods of advertising. Reaping advertising benefits for a fraction of the outlay which your competitors may expend is good economics in anyone’s book. Of course, whichever option you choose, it is worth remembering the one thing which remains true for all advertising: you only have a limited time to capture the attention of the potential customer.
